The first and most important person which comes to my mind : in October 2008 Martti Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

I agree, we mustn't forget about that. but i think that the decision that was made by separating Kosovo which was based on the ideology of ethnonationalist secessionism, the very principle, need to be discussed in detail.

In my opinion, the main persones and events that must be noticed are:
- Ilves's speech on the 5th World Congress of Finno-Ugrian peoples and the following reaction of official russian politicians
- the crisis of the institutes of ethnic democracy: predictable results of votes for the leaders of Mari National Congress (Mariy Mer Kangash) and Udmurtian National Congress (Udmurt Kenesh)
- building of port in Ust'-Luga - a threat for villages of Vod' people
- establishing of the courses of Udmurtian language in Moscow
- activities of Yumshan Promo (Udmurt Republic) - look www.yumshan.ru
- Pavel Pozdeev - Udmurtian Kulturtraeger, the leader of Yumshan Promo
- dj darali - amazing Udmurtian ethnotrance
- Udmurtlyk - 1 year of working (Udmurtlyk is an Udmurtian community, created within vkontakte.ru, Russian equivalent of Facebook) - it's the first experience of numerous (for Udmurts) community which unites Udmurtian youth and promotes (using modern forms) being Udmurt, speaking Udmurtian and staying within Udmurtian culture
- 'Honoured Udmurt' - this year this recently established award was given to Artemiy Troitskiy, musical critician - the apogee of ideological incomprehensibleness of some Udmurtian best specimens
- Finno-Ugrian Esperanto
- first publishing of the newspaper on Lyudik dialect of Karelian language, launched by the activists of "TRIAS" - among them Aleksei Tsykarev and Alina Chuburova
- URALISTICA
- apogee of Lubok (russian notion for the (cheap) popular print (with a brightly-coloured picture in a primitivistic style)): Udmurtian old women in traditional wearings performing modern pop\rock songs

08.08.08. произошли не только известные Вам события. В этот день в Республике Марий Эл группой социально-активных граждан было принято решение об учреждении общественного Фонда поддержки и развития гуманитарных связей родственных (финно-угорских) народов «РОДО». Генеральным директором Фонда и Председателем Правления Фонда (по должности) был избран Сергей Павлович Калягин, Председателем Попечительского совета была избрана Галина Евгеньевна Шкалина.
At 08/08/08 there were not well-known events only. This day in the Republic of Mary El the group of socially-active citizens made a decision to establish the Public Foundation for the Support and Development of Humanitarian Connections of Kindred (Finno-Ugric) Peoples “RODO”. Sergey Pavlovich Kalyagin was elected as a General Director of the Foundation and a Chairman of the Foundation’s Board (on a post), and Galina Evgenevna Shkalina was elected as a Chairman of the Foundation’s Trustee Council.

«ВийАр» – новое марийское общественное объединение, созданное 19 ноября 2008 года при Центре-музее имени Валентина Колумба.
5 декабря 2008 года это молодое поколение выпустило свою первую газету, которую решили назвать также звучно и значительно – «ВийАр».
